Nan Zhang (Ethan)
Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine Practitioner
Ethan is a Registered Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Practitioner
Ethan Zhang holds a Master’s degree in Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine from Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with a major focus in Orthopaedics and Traumatology. From the beginning of his medical training, he has been dedicated to integrating classical Chinese medicine theory with modern medical understanding in the management of musculoskeletal disorders and pain conditions.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is said that “the Liver governs the sinews and the Kidney governs the bones.” The nourishment of muscles, tendons and joints depends on the harmonious flow of Qi and Blood through the channels and the functional balance of the internal organs. Whether it is neck and lower back pain, chronic joint degeneration, or post-surgical recovery, these conditions are viewed not only as structural issues but also as imbalances affecting the whole body.
During his postgraduate training, Ethan received systematic education in both surgical and conservative management of spinal and joint disorders, including lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis, cervical spondylosis, frozen shoulder, knee osteoarthritis, and traumatic injuries. He completed clinical rotations in orthopaedics, trauma, rehabilitation and emergency departments in major teaching hospitals, building a strong foundation in both biomedical pathology and traditional Chinese medicine approaches.
After moving to Australia, Ethan worked extensively within the private hospital system, particularly in orthopaedic surgery, including joint replacements, arthroscopic procedures, and fracture fixation surgeries. Through years of involvement in the perioperative environment, he developed a deep understanding of anatomical structures, mechanisms of injury, surgical intervention, tissue healing, and multidisciplinary patient management. This experience strengthened his appreciation of the role Chinese medicine can play alongside modern medicine. While surgery addresses structural pathology, many patients continue to experience residual pain, functional limitations, sleep disturbances, digestive issues, and emotional stress. Chinese medicine, with its holistic framework and individualised pattern differentiation, offers valuable complementary support during both conservative treatment and post-surgical recovery.
Ethan integrates acupuncture and herbal medicine to:
Relieve musculoskeletal pain (neck, shoulder, elbow, back, hip, knee
and ankle)
Support recovery from chronic strain and degenerative joint conditions
Assist pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation
Improve residual pain and functional restriction after surgery
Support sports injury recovery
Address headaches, insomnia and digestive dysfunction
Regulate hormonal imbalance and menopausal symptoms
He places particular emphasis on perioperative support - focusing on restoring Qi and Blood, supporting digestive function, regulating emotional wellbeing, and promoting overall recovery to enhance quality of life. Ethan is registered with AHPRA as a Chinese Medicine Practitioner, Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbal Dispenser. His clinical practice emphasises safety, professional standards and evidence-informed care, while remaining grounded in the classical principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He is committed to building a bridge between traditional Chinese medicine and modern healthcare, allowing both systems to work collaboratively to achieve balanced, sustainable health outcomes for patients.
